Personality; Giovanni is, first and foremost, a man of family and while he is also a man of justice and honor it is his love for those he considers his own that drive him. This is not to say that he does not care for strangers or those who are not family by blood, only that their personal welfare is secondary.
As a father and husband, Giovanni is open with both his affections and praise. Kind, if stern in his lessons and admonishments, he always fully intended to teach both Federico and Ezio the ways of the Assassin's order. Allowing them childhoods was an important thing to him, however, and while he did teach them a number of skills (Such as climbing and navigating the rooftops and swordplay) they were never explicitly informed of his career of anything other than a successful banker. He often redirected their inquiries about his late night leavings of their home, a deception necessary to keep his Assassin activities secret from them.
As an Assassin, Giovanni is as ruthless and effective as his ancestors. Trained from birth his skills are very much so on par with others and even at 40 he is able to keep up with and defeat multiple attackers. Working closely with Lorenzo de' Medici, Giovanni often took on missions from the head of Florence in order to protect it from the templars and others who sought to destroy it's (relative) peace. He believed in helping people, even coming to the defense of them in court (in Paola's case) and otherwise keeping himself in the good graces of those who knew him as an Assassin. He made and kept many allies amongst the various factions of people within the city, from thieves and courtesans to mercenaries and tailors his information network often kept him a few steps ahead of those who wanted him dead. His trust however was misplaced on one man and it was what wound up with him executed along with two of his sons in the end.
Giovanni sees his dual lives not as a contradiction or avoidance of the Creed and the fight against the Templars but as a reconciling of the contradictions it holds. He is a protector, fighting for the continued peace of his tiny piece of the world and the freedom of those who live within it. He does not believe that any Assassin should only live as an instrument of war; they are all more than the blades and hoods of their order, they are men and women who live and love and hate and die the same as any other. Nobody can fight for the defense of something they have never felt or experienced, and that fight must be something chosen and not forced upon them in a time of peace.
Both loving family man and ruthless Assassin, Giovanni is something of an idealist. He believes rather firmly that family and love keep them from becoming what they strive to stop and keeps them grounded in reality. While he often dons the robes and sinks his blade in to those who's lives must be ended he does not live his life wearing them.
